stories of five non-Brits on the Great Isle

ELY EEL DAY

Happy Eel Day ya’ll!

What?! You didn’t know Eel Day was something to celebrate? Well…let me tell you, I thought we would be the only ones glorifying this slimy creature, but it was a packed event! I swear all of Cambridgeshire was jammed into the town of Ely.

I’ll keep the history short: the town of Ely used to be surrounded by water, of which was filled with eels! Locals used the fish as a food and income source, and people would travel from as far as London for some “jellied eel”. This product is no longer as desirable as it once was, but Ely is still proud of its origins, and celebrates every year in May with a parade and festival.

The parade is led through High Street by ‘Ellie the Eel’.

Afterwards, everyone gathers in the Jubilee Gardens for eating and drinking and celebrating! T1 and I happened upon the Eel, left unsupervised, and had a little fun.

And of course, don’t go home without a family selfie in front of the giant metal eel sculpture!

Now, I know you’re chomping at the bit to get to Ely, right?! You’re welcome. I hope you enjoy your visit! 😉
