I know, I know. There has been more than sufficient posts on castles. But this one was incredible, so don’t scroll past it! We spent the remainder of our day in Brecon Beacons National Park exploring Carreg Cennen Castle. And it is officially my favorite castle to date!

The views from the ruins were absolutely breathtaking! We visited on a perfect day and you could see for miles and miles! I kept trying to capture the spectacle, but it just couldn’t be done. One of those things you can only savor in your memories.

There has been a castle on this site since the late 12th century. It changed hands between the Welsh and English several times as princes were betrayed by parents, then parents overthrown by children, then children upended by uncles, and finally Kings seizing the property of uncles. You know…typical family drama!

Regardless, this family found lots of areas to discover! The kids were delighted to find the garderobe and even the chute where the garderobe emptied into the courtyard! Grooooossss! Soooo many questions from inquisitive little minds! Can’t say we had an answer to any of them!

Carreg Cennen even has a cave beneath it that was quite challenging to navigate. It was can’t-see-your-hand-in-front-of-your-face dark at the end!

And behind the castle is a little hill that made you feel like you were at the top of the world! It was absolutely incredible. Like, astounding.

Most of all, I just loved watching the kids run around. And ignoring me when I kept asking, “Isn’t this amazing? Have you ever seen anything like it?!” Yeah, sure Mom. Whatever.

What an absolute gem of a day!
