stories of five non-Brits on the Great Isle

HADRIAN & HAGRID

Given that we had been to the Cairngorms before, we bookended our ski trip with a few new adventures! T1 is still an avid consumer of British history, so we made a stop at Hadrian’s Wall. Milecastle 42, Cawfields, to be precise! This milecastle is located at a weak spot in the wall, within the flat ground of Cawfields Crags, where intruders might otherwise pass unseen.

It was pretty funny, actually. After parking, there was a small hike through several cow-proof fences to get to the milecastle, including one aligned with Hadrian’s Wall. I went through first, and a few steps after T1 had passed through, I said to him, “You did it! You just crossed Hadrian’s Wall!” He gave me a blank look, raised his palms, looked around with mouth agape, and then scrunched his face. “What?! That is Hadrian’s Wall?” Clearly, he had envisioned something more attuned to the illustrations in his history book. Regardless, they all still had a good time climbing about!

On the way home, we stopped in Saltburn, aka the edge of the Forbidden Forest! Because, we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to spend two nights sleeping in Hagrid’s Hut!!

Our stay was complete with pumpkins, chickens, and a very brave peacock!

When we weren’t exploring all the nooks and crannies of Hagrid’s Hut, we took a trip to Goathland, where the Hogsmeade scenes were filmed.

Stay tuned, because this is not the last of the Harry Potter adventures we have in store for our little witch and wizards!
